Alcohol Motion Comments

Two documents are available for review: an Alcohol Use Policy, and Proposed Amendments to the Current Rules.
The Alcohol Use Policy was developed as a discussion document and previously shared with the Board. It identifies many of the issues that should be considered if alcohol is permitted in common areas, including underage drinking, unsafe vehicle or golf-cart operation, disruptive conduct, prohibited locations, member responsibility, and enforcement. The policy is not being presented for consideration or a vote. It is included to show how the discussion developed and how the proposed Rule amendments evolved from that discussion.
A review of the policy and the existing Rules shows that many of the policy provisions duplicate language already contained in Rules 8 and 9 and in the Association's enforcement procedures. The proposed amendments were developed to consider whether the relevant issues could be addressed through changes to the existing Rules rather than through a separate policy document.
No decisions have been made. The proposed amendments are a starting point for discussion and should not be viewed as a final recommendation. The Rules and Regulations Committee may recommend that the amendments be accepted, revised, replaced, or rejected in whole or in part, including recommending that no change be made to the current Rules.
The Rules and Regulations Committee will meet on Saturday, August 1, at 9:30 a.m. in the Rec Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to solicit suggestions and recommendations from members regarding the possible Rule changes.
The Association will also seek input from legal counsel and its insurance provider as part of the review process. Member comments, Committee discussion, and professional guidance will all be considered before any recommendation is presented to the Board of Directors.

I am writing to share my concerns regarding the open-container proposal for common grounds. I do not support passing this initiative.
I completely support responsible drinking at individual campsites, which is standard practice for many of us. My concern is specifically with open consumption in shared, public spaces. We currently do not have adequate enforcement to handle individuals who drink irresponsibly, and with many children walking around the campground, safety is a major concern.
We already allow alcohol at specific community events like dances, bonfires and cornhole games. Which is fine, but when certain people become inebriated – more than just a little silly – they not only pose various insurance risks, but they may also disturb other…
Are we a Family campground or an Adult Playground?
Rules 9d has been in place since the beginning – July 1985. The original rule was ‘’No alcoholic beverages of any kind are permitted on SRCA common areas.’
Many members come to SRCA because it is family friendly campground. It was, and is, a major attraction to many potential members. But, because of 50-100 members (about 3,000 members, out of 1150 memberships) want to drink anywhere/anytime, we are now facing a major change to SRCA. Our common grounds have been a safe area for our families for 40 years. Some board members and Chuck, who is Chair of the Safety Team is the one who made the motion to change the rule and make these grounds unsafe by allowing ALCOHOL!! They were given permission by a previous President of the Board, who is no longer even a member. It was to be on a trial basis and would be rescinded if we had any problems. We all know there has been many related problems. Golf cart accidents, property being damaged by drunk driving, underage drinking, fights, loud music being played after hours, to name a few!!! This is not a good example to be setting…
We talked a little about this on the phone today, but here are my thoughts, a little out of order to your specific questions.
First, the Camp’s land is private property, and the Camp can permit any activity that’s legal to engage in just as if it were your own property. Likewise, because the Members’ rights are limited to only what they are granted under the Nonprofit Corporation Law, the Bylaws, and the Rules, the Camp can restrict any activity that’s otherwise legal to engage in on your own property. I say all this just to let you know that the Camp has wide latitude on this issue.

I understand you would like some input from the general membership on Chuck's motion from the July 19th Board Meeting. Campground rules and regulations are designed to protect both environment and fellow campers. They help to maintain order and insure safety for future generations. Respecting our rules and By Laws should be a code of ethics before entering our board. Our rule on Common Ground is a specific code on ALCOHOL for a reason of 40 years. Common grounds have always been a safe area for our families especially children!! The motion made by the Chair of the Safety Committee is absurd!! This will be a safety concern that will haunt this campground if overturned. Enforcing this rule…
